| Mission | The mission of Himalayan HealthCare (HHC) is to create sustainable development programs in the remote areas of Nepal that will improve the quality of life for its people. HHC provides primary healthcare, including disease prevention services, community education, and income generation programs that enable people to be self-supporting in the long-term. HHC has been operating in Nepal for nearly 23 years and currently serves 300 thousand people in four villages of Dhading and 48 villages of Ilam, most of which are accessible only by foot. |

| Clean Cooking Activities | Since it inception more than two decades ago, HHC has been constructing chimneys in village households in Tipling to reduce the risk of lung disease caused by open hearths that are commonly used in Nepal. In 2010, HHC introduced an efficient woodstove prototype, modeled on one promoted in Nepal by the nonprofit Practical Action, in the villages of Tipling, Lapa and Shertung. These stoves reduce the amount of firewood required by 50%, which decreases the time spent by families, women in particular, collecting wood and also lessens the environmental impact of cooking by reducing air pollution and deforestation. The most important feature of the efficient stove is the chimney, which forces smoke to exit the home and improves indoor air quality. The efficient woodstoves are relatively inexpensive at a cost of only $50, including labor, clay bricks and reinforcement steel for the stove opening. The construction of the stoves is implemented and supervised by local villagers trained by HHC, and most of the materials are made locally. Between 2010 and 2014, HHC built approximately 438 efficient woodstoves, directly benefiting the lives of thousands of individuals. Dozens of other households in the area have followed HHC's lead and implemented the HHC prototype independent from HHC's support. In 2015 alone, HHC plans to build one stove in every household in the three villages of northern Dhading, or another 1,300 efficient woodstoves. |
| Partnership | HHC would like to participate in the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves as an implementer. HHC can lend its expertise in developing and implementing a clean cookstove initiative using locally accessible materials and labor in remote villages in a landlocked country. HHC can also provide best practices on training and identifying skilled labor, educating communities on the importance of improved air quality and creating consumer demand for clean cookstoves. HHC can likewise benefit from the Global Alliance's knowledge base, possibly learning how other technologies may be used for clean cookstove development in Nepal and how to transition from a donor-driven approach to one that is more market oriented. |
