| Clean Cooking Activities | In commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative, IIX is developing a “Women’s Impact Bond” (WIB) which is a pooled fixed income investment vehicle that will raise funds for clean cook-stove companies by scaling their revenue-generating programs. IIX has identified the market for clean cook-stoves as ideal for the WIB given that many cook-stove companies already have a proven business model but lack the funds to scale. The WIB will raise $10 million of debt capital, with an expected maturity of 5 years and will be sold to impact investors. Impact investors are those who invest to generate a social or environmental impact alongside a financial return. The WIB will be listed on the Impact Exchange, which is the world’s first social stock exchange that is devoted to listing shares and bonds issued by social enterprises, NGOs and social impact funds. The proceeds from the WIB would help scale clean cook-stove businesses and Microfinance Institutions focusing on cook-stove lending. As a result, girls and women who tend to be the primary household caregivers would benefit from improved health, increased disposable income and greater productive time available. In terms of its wider impact, the funds raised by the WIB are expected to enable clean cook-stove companies to protect an additional 2.63 million people from harmful air pollution, avoid over 315,000 tons of greenhouse gases, save over 456,000 tons of wood and directly benefit the lives of over 525,000 women. |
| Partnership | The success of such an innovative and pioneering bond will require the support of organizations that share IIX’s vision and drive to support women. IIX is looking for such organizations to partner in providing program and implementation support. As such, the support of the GACC will be instrumental in delivering the first Women’s Impact Bond to the world. The GACC could potentially act as a facilitator by supporting IIX through their vast network of connections, helping to connect IIX to potential borrowers and investors, as well as those interested in supporting the development of the bond. Finally, based on our experience in social capital markets, some of the opportunities that IIX can offer its supporting partners include: Access to IIX’s network of partners in the social finance sector and Impact Exchange. Opportunities for direct investment in well-screened SEs. Interaction with IIX’s pipeline of NGOs and Social Enterprises, which are potential underlying borrowers Proven impact assessment tools and capabilities Expertise on accessing capital markets and in listing on the Impact Exchange. |
